An OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1995 with an annual revenue of five hundred million Rand, Bell Equipment has since grown into a significant operation with annual revenue in excess of R3,5-billion.
This represents a quantum leap forward for a company that started in 1954 as a small engineering and equipment repair service. The business was founded by Mr Irvine Bell in Empangeni, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa and among his early inventions were the unique self-loading sugar cane trailer and the tri-wheeler machine developed for this industry.
Over the years Bell Equipment has developed into a leading global manufacturer and exporter of a wide range of materials handling machines. The company manufactures and markets an impressive range of over 50 models of Articulated Dump Trucks, Wheeled Loaders, Tri-Wheelers, Rigid and Articulated Haulage Tractors, Backhoes, Forklifts, Dozers, Motor Graders, Excavators, Compaction Rollers and a range of customised equipment for the mining, construction, forestry, sugar and related industries.
In addition, Bell Equipment is an appointed distributor in selected territories representing the manufacturers of several leading international brands. The company has strengthened its trading base through trade and strategic alliance agreements with global companies including Kato Works in Japan, John Deere in the United States, Hitachi in Asia and Liebherr in Germany. In 2002 branding deals were concluded with Protec in Germany for compaction rollers and Ausa in Spain for all-terrain forklifts.
Bell Equipment produced its first ADT in 1985. This machine, now led by the new D-series launched at the end of 2001, is the company’s flagship and most popular export. In 2002 the B50D, the world’s first 50 tonne, 6x6 ADT designed specifically for mining applications was introduced into the range.
Bell Equipment’s policy in design and manufacture is to look for opportunities to create added value for our customers. Its success in this regard is best illustrated by Bell Equipment’s continued dominance of the South African ADT and front end loader markets.
Today Bell Equipment is a global supplier with more than 19 000 machines operating in over 60 countries around the world. The Group has 9 marketing and support operations outside of South Africa and 95 offshore distribution outlets and dealerships. Locally it has more than 25 distribution outlets. The Group employs over 2 000 people worldwide.
Throughout its tremendous growth and success the company has retained its Bell family roots. Irvine’s sons are all actively involved in the running of the company. Gary is Chief Executive while Peter and Paul respectively work with the engineering and marketing aspects of the business.
Becoming a world class manufacturer is one of our key initiatives and in 1995 Bell received the ISO 9001:1994 Quality Management System certification and successfully upgraded to the ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2002.
The company has been the recipient of various export awards in 1990, 1991 and 1994 including being elected as the overall winner of the State President’s Award for export achievement in 1991. More recently, in 2001 the company has won the National Productivity Institute’s Gold Award in the corporate category and the Institute of Marketing Management’s Marketing Organisation of the Year Award.
The achievements of Bell Equipment’s design engineers are best reflected by the prestigious awards bestowed on the company. In 1997 Bell Equipment won the Shell Design Award, followed by the SABS Industrial Design Award a year later. The company has won the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Project and Systems Award in 1991 and again in 2002 and the Cullinan Design Award in 1992. In 2002 Bell Equipment also received two awards at the Top Technology 100 Awards, the Autodesk Award for Outstanding Achievement in Design Innovation and the Metals, Machinery, Electrical, Capital Equipment and Construction category award. In 2003 Bell was once again recognised for oustanding technology excellence with the Minister's Award for Overall Technology Excellence: Large Enterprise at the Technology Top 100 awards. Other awards recieved at the same function were the Metals, Machinery, Electrical, Capital Equipment and Construction Award and a Gold Award for having qualified for Technology Top 100 five or more times in the past 10 years.
From humble beginnings it is now Bell Equipment’s goal to be the world’s premium Articulated Truck supplier, and in Africa the equipment brand of choice.
